J5 hosts Cyber Challenge to combat threats involving stablecoins, virtual assets and third-party money laundering

WASHINGTON — Financial crimes like crypto-enabled tax evasion and the misuse of virtual assets are rapidly evolving. To address these threats, financial investigators and analysts from around the world will join the Joint Chiefs of Global Tax Enforcement (J5) at the 8th Annual Cyber Challenge in Weston, Florida, from Aug. 31 to Sept. 4. This year’s event is being hosted by the IRS Criminal Investigation (IRS-CI). The event rotates annually among the J5 members. The gathering will bring together experienced investigators to analyze leads and collaborate on international investigations involving stablecoins, virtual asset tax evasion, and third-party money laundering involving cryptocurrency.

Real-world results

The Cyber Challenge has contributed to major tax and financial crime investigations worldwide. This global collaboration has also produced reports and threat alerts designed to help financial institutions identify and combat fraudulent activity.

In April 2026, a landmark case in the U.S. resulted in the first successful prosecution for tax evasion using non-fungible tokens (NFTs). An individual was sentenced to 12 months’ probation for failing to report more than $13 million in income from digital artwork sales. The defendant paid more than $3.3 million in back taxes and nearly $1 million in interest to the IRS. The investigative lead for this case originated during the 2022 J5 Cyber Challenge.

In February 2026, the former CEO of SafeMoon US LLC was sentenced to 100 months in prison for his role in a fraud and money laundering scheme. Along with co-conspirators, the defendant exploited access to SafeMoon’s liquidity pool to divert and misappropriate millions of dollars in tokens for personal gain. J5 member countries assisted the U.S. investigative team by sharing information and intelligence regarding the scheme and subjects.

Tackling emerging threats

Since the first Cyber Challenge in 2018, the J5 has expanded and refined its focus areas. Early events concentrated on darknet markets and vulnerabilities within fintech companies. More recent challenges have addressed the rise of NFTs, decentralized exchanges, cryptocurrency payment platforms, and online casinos. Sustained collaboration with international partners remains essential, enabling the J5 to adapt to evolving trends to effectively identify, investigate, and disrupt increasingly complex, borderless cyber threats. This continued evolution ensures that enforcement efforts are responsive to the rapidly changing cybercrime landscape.
